The situation is going to change and screw caps will allowed also for top wine.
Screw caps for everybody: that's what decree “16 Settembre 2013” fix changing EU rules for Dop and Igt wines (rules 1234/2007 and 607/2009) deleting the exclusive use of natural cork for Docg wines as Brunello di Montalcino, Barolo or Amarone.
Every single Consortium will keep the possibility to fix strongest regulation (in that way also the exclusive use of a particular closure) with a trasformation of “disciplinare di produzione” that has to be introduce within six months.
This decree looks directly to the market, embracing the request coming from several Docg. International consumers asking more and more for screw caps.
North European markets as well as USA and Japan asking for new closure as scew caps, glass or ceramic caps. We do not have to forget that more than 50% of the turn over for Italian wines come from the export. For these reason we have to switch our idea of cork.
