2013 olive harvest, for sure, will not be a memorable year
The harvest had a lot of problems in several part of Italian olive oil area. First of all the climate that starting from this summer follow through a bad weather, not ordinary temperature, late maturation , olive fly and low yield.
First weeks of harvest saw generally, very low yield and olive oils poor in aromas with big displease for producers and a lot of problem for oil mill workers.
At the end of the harvest period seems to be an year not satisfying and poor of enthusiasm. Altogether 2013 Italian olive oils harvest is not like Portugal and Spain but still better than Greece that this year is basically without own olive oils.
Based on ISMEA data, olive oils production will be around 480.000 tons, 8% less respect 2012 data (provisional data). The production decrease is generally tie to price growth but not this time. Spain, one of the biggest Italian competitor for olive oil and wine production, after 2012 production decrease, this year, recover the gap with a strong upswing that bring Iberian production over 1 millions tons. Spanish market and production influence the global price. Tie to this reason we foresee a general decrease of the price.
